At RiskMind, we were recently approached by the security manager of a chain of boutique accessory stores and had to start a organized theft investigation. They had experienced multiple thefts across their branches, and they suspected that an organized criminal gang was behind these incidents. The manager requested our help in finding evidence of the stolen items being sold online or through messaging apps like Telegram. Although they had video footage and stills of the individuals involved, they were hesitant to involve the police due to concerns about potential damage to their reputation.
We suggested extending the search to the darknet, which is known for being a common marketplace for stolen goods. Our investigation began with extracting photos of the individuals involved and conducting an online facial recognition search. Unfortunately, this initial search yielded no results.
To further the investigation, we enlisted the help of a seasoned field operative who had experience dealing with similar cases and had knowledge of the groups involved in this type of theft. Upon reviewing the extracted photos, the operative recognized one individual as a member of a criminal ring. We confirmed this information by locating one of the individual's social media accounts.
At this stage, our field operative recommended against further pursuit of the investigation. Based on this advice, we provided our client with the materials gathered, a detailed report, and strongly urged them to turn the evidence over to the police and continue the case with the support of law enforcement officials.
Our experience in this case serves as a reminder that investigations can lead to unexpected outcomes and that it's not always worth pursuing every lead, especially when there are potential negative consequences for the client. We at RiskMind remain committed to providing thorough and professional services while keeping our clients' best interests in mind.
