In the world of business, partnerships are formed with the expectation of mutual benefit and growth. When trust is broken and a partner disappears with a significant amount of money, it can be devastating for the other party. This was the case for one of our clients who approached us a decade after his business partner disappeared with a significant sum of money. The client had lost hope of ever locating the partner, but our team was able to take on the challenge and locate the missing partner.
The client had loaned his partner $500,000, secured in a written agreement. After a year of normal operations, the partner disappeared without a trace, leaving the client with a loss of almost $2 million, including interest. Despite the long period of time that had passed, the client requested that we embark on a search for the missing partner, hoping to reclaim what was rightfully his.
Our team of experienced investigators had all the tools and working methods at our disposal, and we began by building a personal and business profile of the missing partner to map his activity over the past decade. The first step in our investigation was to gather information from family members abroad, including social networks, property registration, and photos on the web. We spent hours researching, searching, connecting, and piece by piece, we were able to trace the partner's distant family members in an American suburb.
Our local field agent was then dispatched to the area under a different identity to confirm the information we had gathered. Through random meetings, he was able to connect with the family and collect enough information to cross-reference with the previous information gathered from social networks. From all signs, it seemed that the missing partner was living under a different identity in the same suburb as his distant family members.
During the search for his property, the local field agent went to the street where the partner lived and documented the property according to what his family members had told us. In the documentation photos, he ensured to also capture the person who lived in the property. The photos were shown to the client, and it was confirmed that the person captured in the photo was indeed the missing partner.
This case highlights the importance of due diligence in any business partnership.
